PMB downloads?

Having gone from XP to windows 7 Pro I seem to need new versions of the Sony software. I have the XP/Vista distribution disk that came with my A550 but the win 7 system does not want to load from the older disk. (I am told this is a driver model issue between 32 and 64 bit operating systems)

I found the updates listed here on the Sony site but seem to need full versions. Any suggestions? Thank you

Sony has two downloads for PMB for the A550. One is an update for a version you already have installed. The other is the full version.

Thank you TCav. It would seem Sony has replaced PMB with Play Memories Home. From what I think I am seeing the SPUDownloadManager upgrades an existing version of PMB. Starting from scratch it would not let me have the full version of PMB so I had to go with the newer product. All is well

On a completely unrelated topic I know someone who has what appears to be the Quarterdeck Canon from the USS Hector. His wife is less than happy giving floor space to it so it is looking for a new home. I would not think it had any real monetary value but I know nothing of such things. Any suggestions?

That would be a Cannon, not a Canon. ;)

My guess is that that it would have a lot of brass, which goes for about $2/lb. For a cannon, that could be quite a sum. It's probably a signal cannon, which, as such, could be worth more, but would be harder to find a buyer for. eBay might be an option, but your friend might have to pay for whatever shipping was necessary to complete the transaction. If your friend lives near someplace that might have some affinity for the USS Hector (AR-7), (Long Beach, for instance) a local museum might be interested in it.

The USS Hector suffered a particularly ignominious end; it would be hard for her signal cannon to do worse.

Yacht clubs like to have signal cannons. He might make some inquiries at local marinas.

Were the spell checker truly intuitive as advertised it would have caught that one. Oops :o

This one is the same as the one we had on the Camden (AOE-2). I will see if I can get a few current images. Brass barrel on a wooden carriage. Heavy sucker.

What happened to Hector? I remember you saying you served aboard a tender.

TCav Jan 1, 2014 1:02 PM

Yes, I served on three tenders: USS Bryce Canyon (AD36) in Pearl Harbor, USS Vulcan (AR5) in Norfolk, and USS Holland (AS32) in Scotland.

The Hector was decommissioned and leased to Pakistan who returned it after 5 years when it was sold to a salvage company in India who beached it and cut it apart.

What a sad ending to a distinguished career. I felt sad for a few of the vessels we dismantled. For others I thought we were doing them favors

I will buy the cannon before I see it scrapped. I am sure a home for it could be found if transport can be handled. As you point, out shipping would be a major expense.

Both the Bryce Canyon and the Vulcan were old (by any standard) when I served aboard them, and I'd often joke with shipmates about buying our ship back someday, in the form of razor blades or Toyotas. But after 43 years of unwavering service through 3 wars and a multitude of humanitarian actions, the fate of the Hector is sad by any measure.
