Default Sigma lens question

From reading here, I realized my Sony 17-70 doesn't qualify as a door stop. What do the experts think about the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 that sells for about $430 at B&H. Don't really want to pay the diff for the 2.8 lens.

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 is one of the better stabilized standard zooms.

But since your Sony Alpha has sensor shift image stabilization in the camera body, optical image stabilization in the lens is superfluous, redundant and unnecessary. Sigma's unstabilized 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 might be a better choice, though it's been discontinued. The best unstabilized standard zoom for the A-Mount is the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

I have the discontinued Sigma 17-70 non stabilized non hsm lens and I like it. I try to stop down from lowest fstop available when I can, but even at lowest wide open I don't notice any issues like the reviews say. The only lens I would upgrade to from my sigma would be the Zeis 16-80 or the new Sony 2.8 lens.
