There's an Opteka650-1300mm Telephoto Lens on e-bay (UK site) for the 5D/7D/A100 going for £150 (from the USA) P&P I guess would be extra. This seems awfully cheap. Is it worth a punt or will I just be wasting my money?

Would a 500mm or 500-1000mm Mirroe lens be better due to compactness?

Thanks for any feedback.

I guess you have to take it for the team.

hey Juzzie

i have both Opteka lens you are looking at and have been a little disappointed with them. I have found it difficult to get the subject in focus. i admit that all shots i have taken with them have been hand held...but its just not what i expected. The 500 mirror looks good on the 5D body and the 500-1000 telephoto lens looks down right intrusive. It's too long for the body size and i find it too heavy for such a small and light body. if i had my time again i would use the money i spent on the two and bought 1 better quality lens(secondhand)

the first 4 shots below are with the 500-1000 f8 and the 18-70 kit lens and the red plane was taken with the 500 mirror f8

as you can see above with bernabeu beautiful sharp shot of the bird you can get what you want....but you have to pay for it. The difference in price/brand would be enough to tell you that you are going to get a better picture with a Minolta 500 Mirror Auto Focus f8 Lens (AUD$735.50) than an Opteka 500 Mirror of the same type (AUD$170). Post processing can compensate for some of it's shortcomings.

i hope this helps in your choice

as juzzie has asked about the Opteka brand and i have both the 500 type lens i am able to comment on them. Having never owned a Minolta AF 500 Mirror lens i can not compare the two together as far as performance goes. Price wise i can, as my friend above has pointed out....USD$549. Thats about AUD$735 for a Minolta Auto Focus 500 Mirror lens, thats almost 4.5 times the price of the Manual Focus Opteka Mirror lens....but you get what you pay for.
Given a choice....i would have a Minolta AF any day

Many thanks for the replies. I think I might give it a miss despite how tempting (i.e. cheap!) it is.
