I need a remote shutter release for my 5D and since we're a frugal bunch I was wondering if anyone has tried an economical alternative to the RC-1000s.

I found several on e-bay for about $10. Any thoughts?

I've been very happy with the short version UNIPHOX which I bought direct.
Their service and follow up was unexpectedly excellent.

Good quality, works as described. uniphox.com probably cheaper on ebay though

Another option is just to make one yourself. I put this one together using an old glasses case. This fits my big mitts much better than the little thin remotes. The two small switches from Radio Shack were under a buck:

It's been a while since I made it, but I found the wiring instructions on google somewhere. It's not risky to the camera, just 2 switches (focus & shutter) and a common.
