As user Mercury694 notes in a nearby thread <your DOF at 4 ft and f1.7 (50mm) is 3/16 of an inch>

If that's too much DOF then maybe a 1.4 is for you - but I can't see that expensive 1/2 stopbeing usable very often. Time to be thankful for a 1600 ISO that is usable and 3200 that will serve.

FWIW, I just read a post elsewhere from someone that had an early 20mm f/1.8. Sigma rechipped it at no charge and it's working fine now.
