Too expensive?

I used extension tubes way back with my first camera, am Exakta. (Am I giving my age away?). I could never get the bugs to sitstill long enough to find the right combination of tubes!

Anyway, I tried your light tent suggestion. I guess I need to do more work ... a coin shot looked fine, the battery top is still a mess.

Regards,

Check your kitchen for unused Tupperware (or similar products that would make good light diffusers) if you're having trouble getting rid of any "hot spots" with your existing lighting.

Here is a "canned solution" that can also be used:

http://www.clouddome.com/

You've got a limited dynamic range to work with. So, if you have a big difference between light and dark, it can be hard to capture the entire range of brightness. Your first example looked like the entire battery was a bit overexposed (with one hot spot that looked like blown highlights).

But, if you're getting it using a darker exposure, you'll need to use more diffused light so that your subject is more evenly illuminated.

Shooting raw can also help with Dynamic Range (you'll get a bit more headroom for the highlights).

Hi MinoltaNut,

So this is what's been keeping you busy. Nice work! No need to buythose extension tubes now!

How did you diffuse the light for the second battery shot?

Regards,
