I'm new to this forum, hello.

I've recently bought a Sony DSLR A-100 Alpha w/18-70MM F/3.5-5.6 Lens. I like the lens andcamera & am happy so far. I wantadd a zoom lens for taking pictures of my children playing sports mainly soccer and track. I've read through many posts and see many people recommend the Tamron 28-300 which can be had for $200 plus shipping. Would this be a better or comp. Lens: Sony 75-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 Compact Telephoto Zoom Lens on sale for $229.?

I can't afford any of the F/2.8 lens. I'm no pro, but would like to get shot good enough to display on the wall of my home of the kids.

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

Rather than the new Sony or KM 75-300, I would check KEH for a used Minolta 1st or 2nd generation 75-700. I think you would have a much nicer lens for less money. If you only want new, I own andlike the Tamron for the money, but I have never tried it for action shooting.

By the way thanks for the reply.

According to the data at photodo, at similiar focal lengths, the Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 and the Minolta AF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 are about equal (that is, neither of them is great), andKEH has the Minolta slightly cheaper. You'd lose the 28-75mm range if you went with the Minolta, but you'd get a slightly brighter lens (f/5.6 vs. f/6.3 at 300mm, or about 1/2 f-stop). That's not so much an issue for outdoor action shots, though, but it might be nice for indoor shots.

I take photo's of my stepsons 1/2 brother (don't let me confuse you) that lives with us.

Being that you have the 18-70 kit lens (that can take very good photo's) the Minolta 70-210 f4 lens would be one that I would consider. First it starts at 70mm where your other lens ends and although it does not go to 300 the quality will be much better up to 210mm.

If you desire a lens that goes up to 300mm I would consider the Minolta 75-300 f4.5-5.6 thats a very good lens.

Both of these can be bought used for a reasonable price.

Here's one with theMinolta 70-210 f4. Shot at f5.6 1/1000 ISO 200 only croped and resized no pp. I was over a 100' away when I took this shot.

... and the Minolta 70-210 f/4 is a very good lens (read: better than the other two discussed herein), but is almost twice the price.

And you've got a Sony A-100 with a 10MP sensor; you can crop.
