So I got my Tamron 200-400 5.6 in yesterday

Nothing spectacular, just a quick hand held shot I took yesterday evening. These are cropped pretty tight so you can see what I'm getting from the lense. Next I need to try stopping it down a bit.

This is a 400mm f/5.6

Hard tojudge without any comparison. We don't know how much you cropped and what the uncropped image looks like. By itself it looks pretty crappy.

Yes it does, but its cropped down probably to a 1:1 ratio and hand held.

I've been meaning to post the full pic, but was out with the family all day yesterday.

I'll post the full pic tonight.

I have one and I think shooting with any lens at 400mm is real toughhandheld especially at slower shutter sppeds even with IS. Even on a tripod I get excessive movement so I have resoted to using the timer or remote to get better results.

kberntsen,

I'm amazed how anyone can handhold at this focal length and get any kind of acceptable image. I've been playing with a Tamron 200-500mm for a few weeks now and was initially quite disappointed with the results. It seems to get a little better with some practice. I seem to get better results using a monopod. Here's an example from yesterday's test session. Shot at 420mm, 1/320 sec @ f9.

kberntsen, those are nice shots from what I can see in these pics. Those little flowers are very sharp. I got the Viv 100-400, so I am set for the long range, but otherwise this would look like a viable lens to me.
