There's a small chance that I might have the 198th Production Sony DSLR-A700.

That's a good thing from my perspective (the first couple of hundred cameras probably got a lot of extra attention). :-)

I've got 0500198, with the earliest number I see in the lists around showing 0500001. ;-)

I hope so anyway. With a camera that early in the production run, they're probably inspecting every camera built carefully. :-) This is what the Sony page in the U.S. says about the new Version 2 Firmware Upgrade to the DSLR-A700.

This update is needed only for the following cameras:
  • DSLR-A700 (body) with serial numbers 0500001 - 0508500[/*]
  • DSLR-A700P (body bundled with 16-105 lens) with serial numbers 800001 - 800200[/*]
  • DSLR-A700K (body bundled with 18-70 lens) with serial numbers 1100001 - 1104550[/*]
From the other Sony sites I've found (Europe, and more), it looks like mine is the earliest serial number range (but, I haven't looked into Asian Serial numbers yet).

The serial number may not be indicative of a camera's position in the assembly line either. lol

In any event, the camera is working great, before and after the firmware upgrade from v1 to v2 I just made today.

Yea, yea, yea. You should get one. The beefed up focus motor and autofocus algorithms would be super with your 80-200mm f/2.8

Hi JimC,

Where can I find the serial number and the model number on the A 700.

Got mine on October 30, 2007 with the DT 18-250 mm zoom lens here in the Philippines.

Camera is fantastic and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Regards,
xer2004

On the bottom of the camera (where the tripod socket is) at the bottom right of the camera's base.
