The 16MP Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II has a 36x24mm image sensor that produces a 4992x3328 pixel image, That's a pixel pitch of 138.667 pixels/mm.

The 12MP Sony α700 has a 23.5x15.6mm image sensor that produces a 4288x2856 pixel image, That's a pixel pitch of about 183 pixels/mm.

The Canon's image sensor is approximately 53% larger than the Sony's, and the Sony's pixel pitch is about 32% higher than the Canon's.

So for the same focal length lens, the Sony will have 32% greater detail. But for the same angle of view, resolution is all that matters, and the Canon's vertical and horizontal resolutionsare about 16% better than the Sony's.

Canadian prices:

DSLR-A700 Body = $1699

EOS 1DS Mark II Body = $8759

That extra resolution doesn't come cheap!
