Just bought a 200mm 2.8 G lens, want to get a 1.4x TC, I don't know which TC will have the best IQ for this lens, I know Minolta had one but it is hard to find, Sony has one but it is too expensive for me. Please help. Thanks

My experience with an inexpensive teleconverter is that it adds a lot of chromatic aberration.

I think it would be a shame to pollute the images of a 200mm f/2.8 HS G lens with a cheap TC. I'd go with the Sony/Minolta or at least a Kenko/Tamron.

Congrats! I'd love to have one of those.

I'd grab this TC to use with it, before someone else does:

Minolta 1.4X APO II (200, 300, 600 APO ONLY) WITH CAPS, CASE, TELECONVERTER at KEH.COM for $399

If that was the only lens I planned on using a TC with, I'd go with the Minolta for the highest quality. If I wanted to use a TC with other lenses, I'd probably grab a Kenko Pro.

Thanks TCav and JimC.

I want to know:

1- What is the exact model number for Tamron and Kenko 1.4x TC?

2- What is the IQ of these two TC compare to the Minolta APO TC?

3- I may purchase the SONY 70-200 F2.8 in the future, can Ithe Tamron and Kenko TC on this lens? The link that JimC gave me for Minolta TC stated that the Minolta TC does not work for the 70-200 and will damage both if used. I want to have the 1.4x TC that can work perfectly on the 200mm F2.8 and 70-200 F2.8.

Thanks again.

Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DG AF 1.4x ($195 at Adorama, $179 at B & H)

Tamron SP AF 1.4x PRO (No one seems to have this in the Sony/Minolta mount.)

Nice catch Isifs. That's a very desirable lens and hopefully you will share some images with us - with and without whichever TC you select.

After reading the page that TCav pointed to, one of the Minolta TCs would be my choice. Why compromise a top quality lens with anything less than the best TC?

I agree. And if I was going to degrade a gem like the 200/2.8, I'd get more that just 40% out of it. I'd think I'd go for a 2X TC.

If the 2x TC does not degrade the IQ and still keep the AF functional, I refer it over the 1.4x, which 2x I can buy now? Be sure it can be used on the 70-200 F2.8. Thanks

if you purchase the wrong TC there will be glass to glass contact resulting in a ruined lens

go with the dedicated minolta TC

(as per http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/Produ...p;GBC=&GCC=)

Even the best Teleconverter will degrade the image quality of your 200/2.8.

The best are the Minolta / Sony APO Teleconverters, but they won't work on the 70-200/2.8.

The next best are the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DG AF /Tamron SP AF Pro, and they will work on the 70-200/2.8.

In addition to increasing the lens'focal length (and degrading the image quality), a Teleconverter also makes the lens dimmer. That is, a 1.4X TC will convert your 200/2.8 into a 280/4.0, and a 2.0X TC will convert your 200/2.8 into a 400/5.6.
