I'm asking this question on behalf of my dad who has an Alpha100.

He wants to replace the kit lens as he doesn't feel it's as sharp as it could be.

Does anyone here have any experience of the Sigma 17-70mm macro on a Sony body?

I've seen rave reviews on the lens with Canon fit, but nothing for the Sony fit.

Kindest regards,

A lens is a lens; if it gets good reviews forthe Canon, it will be equally good with an Alpha mount.

The Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.0 seems to be better, and faster to boot.

Another option is the Tamron 17-50/2.8. It's not as long, but if your father doesn't us the long end of the kit lens, then it won't matter. Plus the Tamron has a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout its zoom range, which is great for indoor/low light photography.
