my first guess is that the maxxum one is autofocus and the other is manual focus.

also a while back minolta released lenses and bodies with the x's overlapping but i believe it was exxon that sued them to get it removed cause it looked like their logo.

I am more inclined to say the first part of this post has to do with what you want to know. A good 50mm 1.7 should run around $100 for the AF version and the MF version shouldnt be much at all. this is another way to help you tell.

As ecap says, one may be the manual focus version and the other may be the autofocus version, but I think it's more likely that they are the same lens, but just listed differently.

Where did you see the listings for them? Can you provide links?

Optically should be exactly the same. Some of the Maxxum were the crossed XX version. The crossed-XX version is the mechanically the best version of the lens. This version has some more metal parts than does the more plastic ones.

If the listings are correct (Sony/Minolta AF Mount), you don't need to worry about it (it's either a Maxxum lens for the U.S. Market, a Dynax lens for the European Market, or an Alpha lens for the Japanese market. . It's the same optical design and lens mount that your Sony uses.

You'll find specs, links to user reviews, photo with the lens, and more at this link for the newest "restyled" version of it:

Here's a link to an older version:
