thats kind of what I got from reviews I have read as well. Its nothing spectacular but better than the 18-70. Im not looking for a full zoom 18-300 or anything but a good piece of glass around 18-70 that produces good results would be awesome. I guess there is the 18-70 CZ. Of course there are primes which I do want to get eventually as well but I see myself using a decent zoom lens often.

I have heard some very good things about the Zeiss 16-80, but I can personally attest to the quality and useability of the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. It doesn't go as long as the others, but it's a lot faster. That gives you a lot more freedom to play with depth of field, as well as work in lower light. That's something that none of those other lenses your're talking about can do.

TCav, thanks for posting, I almost forgot about that, I definitely would like a faster lens as well for those low light situations. 17-50 doesn't sound too bad of a focal range. i would only be missing 50-70 which could be covered with my feet most likely if I really needed it. I will check out that lens!

Like you, I am not a pro photo guy. Mostly stuff with the family, some of the grandkids sports, some closeups of flowers and just general stuff.

I upgraded from the A-100 to the A-700 and am using the stock 18-70mm kit lens and I added the new 18-300 Sony.

I am extremely please with the 18-300. It has only been off the camera twice since I got it and that was to use my old Minolta 50mm1.7 for some indoor stuff.

You will love the A-700.

Flying Fossil: thanks! yes I am loving the A700. I loved the A300 and looking at the A700 I was wondering if I would like how it felt because it looked so much bigger (although its just slightly bigger) but it feels amazing in my hands! and the view finder and lcd compared to the A300, WOW! I really didn't think I would notice it that much but the second I looked through the view finder for the first time I was simply AMAZED.

I would like to get a 50mm 1.7 I know it will come in handy quite often.

Good luck with your photos.

Oh, also I sold my A300 today on ebay. so its nice that thats out of the way, help pay for the A700 I just bought haha. I sold it for $500 so I lost $100 but thats ok. the A700 will be with me for many many years to come.

I think you must mean an 18-200mm or 18-250mm or 28-300mm. I don't know of anyone that makes an 18-300mm for these cameras (at least not yet anyway). ;-)

Opps, you are correct Jim, it's the 18-250mm. In any case, I love the lens.
