I was lucky enough to get out last weekend with the new Sony 70-400G.

This is the most impressive lens in this focal range that I've ever used (exception is the 70-200G). It's big and heavy but if you can handle it you will get incredible photo's that need very little editing. With 5.7X zoom, SSM and excellent IQ this was some great optical engineering.

The lenses I'm comparing it to are

Minolta 70-210
Sony 70-300G
Sony 70-200G
Tamron 200-500

I am thoroughly impressed by what this lens can do.

Silent relatively fast focus, incredible bokeh, and extremely sharp with great colours!

Some samples with no sharpening just resize and saturation boost.

Thanks for posting Mike.

Just picked up my 70-400 yesterday and am anxious to go shoot some of the kids soccer this weekend.

Here is my first trial in the back yard of a sparrow, resized and sharpened one click in Picassa3

Thanks for the updates guys. I was wondering when we'd start seeing more users with this lens. It seems that stores are just now receiving them.

Let's see some more posts Mike.
I am going to the San Diego Zoo next week and hope to get some good ones.
I will have my standby SAL18-250 and of course the new SAL70-400.

Will post a few later.

I've had mine for about a week, but not much time for shooting. Here's a couple just messing around on an overcast day. I do think I'm crazy about this lens. Both with 1/4x TC.

I doubt you'll want to use your 18-250 in the same focal range as your 70-400.

The 18-250 is a great super zoom but it does not come close to the IQ the 70-400 can give.

I'm not knockin the 18-250 I just got one this week. It's the best travel lens you could have.

Be sure to post your photo's when you can.

Enjoy San Diego.

It was a lovely day in San Diego, to lovely as the sun was out and it got a little on the warm side. Animals after about 10:30 were pretty much holed up in the shade somewhere.
Got a few pics and gave up.

Comments welcome.
