Default A900 Lens

Hi All,

I got both the A700 and A900. Currently i have a 16-80CZ and 70-210 BEERCAN. I'm looking for 18-200 f/2.8 or lower. Does anyone know where i can get one or what mfg is will go with both Cameras. All SONY has at the f stop is fixed. Thanks...

The Sony/Zeiss 16-80 will only work witht he A700, but thte Beercan is a 'Full Frame' lenses from the bygone days of film, so it will work with both.

Aren't we all.

First, the 18-200 (or so) superzoom lenses are all for APS-C image sensors, and none has a constant aperture of any kind, let alone one as large as f/2.8. Sigma has a 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Macro, and there are used Sigma and Tamron lenses in that approximate range that are all 'Full Frame' lenses, but none of them are particularly good.

Second, f/2.8 is about as large an aperture as you'll find on a zoom lens. There are some f/2.5 lenses but they're wide angle lens, and Olympus has a 35-100mm f/2.0 lens, but it's only for the four/thirds mount.

You would be better served by multiple lenses of less ambitious zoom ranges, than a 'jack-of-all-trades-and-master-of-none' lens.

The A900 lets you use a DT series lens (it automatically crops the image size to 3924 x 2656 pixels).

How wide are you trying to go on the A900?

If you want an uncropped image with a wider angle of view on the A900, you're only going to find lenses with a relatively limited range from wide to long if you want something that bright. For example, the Sony/Carl Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8; or the older Minolta 17-35mm f/3.5G at a half stop slower.

It's just not practical to make a "super zoom" type lens giving you something like 18-200mm with an aperture that wide, especially if you want an uncropped image on the A900.

You you can find full frame lenses in the 17-35mm range that are f/2.8-4 lenses from Minolta, Tamron, and Sigma. Or, if you move up to lenses starting out at 20mm, you have a few more choice (for example, a Sigma 20-40mm f/2.8 and Tokina 20-35mm f/2.8 if you can find one). I've got a Tamron SP 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 that would work on the A900 without cropping that's almost as bright on it's longer end (it's a half stop down at f/3.5).

For full frame use, if you don't really need something starting out that wide, you may want to look at something like a 24-70mm f/2.8 instead in a brighter lens (which would give you the same angle of view on the wider end that you'd get with a cropped image from the CZ 16-85mm DT lens on your A900). Sony and Sigma both make 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses that are full frame (and Sigma has a newer HSM model out now, too).

TCav and JimC, thanks you for the advice. I want to be able to get the best picture out of the A900. I just bought a SAL50F/1.4 and its awsome on the A900. My goal is to be a professional wedding photographer. I have done some wedding with friends and want to start my own business. Below is the equipment i currently own.

A700
