Default Sports Lens

Hi. JIM....

Long time no speak but here we are getting ready for football season...
Still don't have the big money to afford the high end stuff so I was wondering if you can give me your wisdom and sound advice in this...

I found 3 lens:
I wanted to know what the differences are if I bought the Minolta or the Sigma lens which is much cheapter than the original Sony G-Lens f/2.8 200mm...

BTW I did get a great deal on the sony flash when Circuit City went out of business but these Sony G-lens were not available in the stores :{.

Thank you again and have an awesome weekend:}

Mika

The first is the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM 'G'. This lens is identical to the earlier Minolta version. It is among the best lenses of it's kind. See the test report at http://photozone.de/sony-alpha-aps-c...-sony_70200_28

The second is the Minolta 200mm f/2.8 'G'. It is also one of the best lenses of its kind. It's better than the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 'G', but it's not a zoom.

The third is the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. It's a reasonably good inexpensive substitute for the Sony. See the test report at http://photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-ap...w--test-report

What sports do you want to shoot?

Hi. TCAV...

Thank you so much for assistants... I am trying to photograph my son's football team.. Last year I learned much about lighting but in the end I realized that I really just needed a faster lens.. I was looking at the Sigma because it was half the price.. I think my f/4.8 lens is great on days when the weather is perfect but when it comes to rain or sunset and especially night it just goes from worse to just bad even with all the adjustments to the camera the lens is way to slow.. Please advise. Thank you.

Hi.. I also forgot to ask about lens that has some dust in it? I see this other Minolta which is low priced than the Sony G.

Football with a 70-200mm lens will be tough. That's not really long enough for shots of wide receivers or action on the opposite side. But if you need f/2.8 then there isn't much else.

Dust inside the lens isn't a big deal. The lens can't focus on dust on the lens, let alone inside it. It does cut down ont he amount of light that goes through the lens, and in extreme cases can cause odd flare, but if it's not too much, uyou shouldn't have a problem.

Just to follow on from what TCav said with 200mm you are looking at having to shoot within about 25 yards to get good results, outside of that you need a longer lens. Many people will try to shoot sports outside this range but the quality really falls off.

As for the different lenses I've not used them (well apart from the Sigma) and don't have any insight so can't advise.

The Minolta 80-200/2.8 isn't as good as the Sony 70-200/2.8, but it's better than the Sigma.

BTW, take a look at http://www.dyxum.com/reviews/lenses/...asp?IDLens=452 There's a reviewer that talks about using the sigma to shoot night football games that you might want to read.

Default WOW. I like those pics

Hi. TCAV and JimC

Thank you guys so much.. I saw those pictures and they were really good for night because that is what I struggle with... You can see there is a little fall off or a bit more noise than in the backgroud but at least it doesn't have the long lightening lines like my other lens had even with a flash...

Default A100 against the A300

Hey Jim and TCAV

I actually wrote to that guy John on that website and he wrote me a nice email but when I wrote back I never got a reply He stated that I would be better off upgrading from a Sony A100 to the Sony A300 but I asked him about the G Lens F/2.8 200mm which we have talked in the past about for the night football games but I don't know his thougts because he never replied eheheh. So what do you guys think. Should I be looking more at the body of the camera instead of looking for a faster lens. If I did upgrad the body would the F/4.5-5.6 still be good enough? Please advise. Thank you......
