Default lens hood

Hi Guys
My a330 came with a lens hood (I think that's the right term). I have no idea what it's used for and when to use it. Asking around I've been told everything from "to keep the sun off the lens" to "to keep the rain off the lens."
Can someone set me straight?

Thanks

I had to laugh at the keeping the rain of the lens as the reason, however it can help keep the front element spot free but that's not the reason.

It is to stop bright light sources causing lens flare so I use my hood in all shooting conditions as it can be caused indoors with the room light as well as the sun.
