I don't know enough about the D5100 yet, but my first question is this:

What do you want to shoot?

Just general photography.Around the house,new born,children,hunting,outdoors etc.

Between the Sony A580 and the Nikon D5100?

Flip a coin.

Go to a good camera store and buy the one that feels best.

If you can't comfortably hold a camera, if you can't find the controls and commands when you need them, you'll miss some shots and be dissatisfied with the camera.
