Default SONY HVL58AM Flash

Does anyone have any opinion on this flash. I'm thinking of getting it for my A700 and A900. Thank you.

It's a very well liked flash. You should be happy with it's performance.

I would start with a Metz first:
http://www.metz.de/en/photo-electron...formation.html

1. It has the same GN as the HVL58AM, but this unit also has a secondary head for fill which I've found quite useful
2. It also works in the wireless mode (both as controller and slave)
3. It costs $100 less and is USB upgradeable

-> I would get the HVL58AM when I need to do ratio with more than one flash, but then this solution is not as effective (@ two or more heads) as they would cost as much as my Elinchrom's at only a fraction of their power...

BTW you're also adding a very Nikonese feature to the A900 with this Metz: Audio beeps feedback for the different correct, under-exposed, and flash ready signals without having to monitor the viewfinder ever again!!!

I bought the 58 a few weeks ago. I purchased it from pcnation . com for $379.99. I also used bing cash back for $21.26, bringing my total down to around $358 with free shipping. I did NOT get a used/grey market product.
I have already registered it with Sony.
I'm very happy with the performance and the price.

It's a very nice flash, I have two of them myself.

If you want to use it off camera, the A900 won't be able to trigger it straight out of the box, you will need a Sony Off Camera Cable (FA-CC1AM) or another flash (such as HVL-F20AM) to use as a trigger.

A700's built-in flash can trigger remote flashes.
