Well, 28-300mm is a wide range. Some times, if you are in a low light environment, the lens is not able to lock focus at the first try. So it goes all the way to the end of the range (upward or downward) before it tries again. Obviously this is a long process (in photographic terms). However, this is not a problem unique to this particular lens but to a good number of long zoom lenses. The bottom line is, shooting with a long zoom in poor lighting conditions is a bad idea anyway. Long zooms need light.

since its not an f2.8 or 4.0 over the entire length when you shoot in low light you have use high ISO (1600 at times). SO if you need a perfect blown up shot of something at 2am it might not be the perfect lens to use although I always get usuable shots but then again 99.8% stay on the computer and are viewed on computers.

When that starts to happen I usually quickly zoom all the way out let it focus and zoom in quickly and snap the shot.

Yeah, that works...I've tried it. Thanks, Dave.
