Patience. ;-)

Sony probably wants to do it "right", versus a clunky type of solution. After all, they're the only one with a dSLR that has a decent live view system (not counting the new EVIL type cameras).

Personally, I've never used the movie modes in cameras I've owned with it (other than to test them real quick to see if they worked or not). lol

But, I can see where that kind of thing is going to be more popular going forward. So, I suspect they have something in mind, given that they are a huge player in the video camera area. We'll have to wait and see.

I think Jim is probably right with Sony waiting to release a model with video until after it's sd close to perfect as they can get it. They have a huge rep with their video camera lines. People buying a Sony camera that also features video capability are gonna expect pretty big things from it.

I'm not talking about you and me; I'm talking about newbies. They think they'll be able to use a dSLR to replace their camcorder. They won't know until they try, and by then, they've already bought something else.

Yes, there's pressure on Sony to get it right (some of it self-imposed). That means supporting autofocus and autoexposure while recording video, that will be tough. (BTW, have they accomplished that with any of their P&S digicams?)

I hope I'm not intruding too much, and I will probably flag my total ignorance herewith, when I ask what an EVIL type camera is? This is the second time today that I stumble across this term and I cannot hold back any more, so please enlighten me!

It's a term you see used often in digital photography related forums.

Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens

In other words, a camera that lets you change lenses but isn't a normal SLR design with an optical viewfinder, reflex mirror, etc. Instead, these are mirrorless cameras that use an Electronic Viewfinder (or their LCD) so that you'll get a Live View feed using the camera's main imaging sensor, without the problems associated with flipping a mirror back and forth like you have with a traditional SLR design.

Well - What do you know, Jim!

I ask you a question about my own camera, without knowing that you are in fact talking about my Panasonic Lumix DMC G1 m4/3 - a dSLR without the mirror - as it says in my signature...

Thanks a lot for enlightening me!

Right.

That's not really an Official Term or anything (at least not that I know of). It's just one that I've been seeing for years in digital camera forums, with members wondering when manufacturers will get around to making cameras like that.

Now, we have them (and your Panasonic is an example). I guess we'll have to "wait and see" if the use of EVIL will "stick" or not. Given how it sounds, maybe not.

No, in a recent interview, Toru Katsumoto, General Director of the Alpha Division of Sony, was unambiguous. There *will* be A700 replacement and that they have been working on it. He wasn't clear whether it would be released in 2010 or 2011.

Maybe they were planning to release it soon, but last minute decided that it needs a redesign (for video) to be a worthy competitor to Canon 7D? Some speculation is that no video model that they were planning to release as A7xx would be released as A650; so there might be A650 coming soon, (PMA?) and A7xx is delayed but will definitely come later.
