Default Standard kit lens

I've been wondering why Sony went from the 18-70mm standard lens for the A200 to the 18-55mm for the later models. Is the latter a better performer, or was it just a matter of cutting cost? The 18-70 is a great portrait lens, having the focal length equivilency of 105mm.

The original 18-70 was not very good. See Sony 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAL-1870 (Tested)

The replacement 18-55 is better. See Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM SAL-1855 (Tested)
  • The lens is the thing.
