Default lens contacts

can any one tell me about the different number of electrical contacts on the minolta lenses. the one that came with my sony a230 has 8, my other 3 minolta lenses have 5. the af seems to work fine,and picture quality is great. thanks

The extra 3 contacts were first incorporated into the A-Mount to support the Motorized Zoom feature of the xi lenses and bodies, but were later switched to perform the ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) function, primarily used for flash. Lenses with 5 instead of 8 contacts are just older.

how or will this effect the flash function,or am i over thinking this

The extra three contacts provide distance information to the camera body, which is primarily used for flash. See the description of ADI here: http://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/flashcomp_mm.php#adi

So, in answer to your question, not very much.
