For what you want to do, I think that's the best choice.

One last thing I would like to know is, how much better is the built quality of the 18-50mm EX compared to the 17-70mm is it that noticeable?

Is it worth sacrificing the extra zoom range (20mm) worth it?

I've never heard anybody complain about the build quality of either. I don't think the 'EX' is anything to worry about here.

It should be a fine lens for a day time walk around lens. Do post some samples when you get it.

I have just ordered my lens at my local photography store.
They didn't have it in stock, but it should arrive in less than a week.
I will then post some pictures of the lens and some photos taken with this lens.

Thanks to all for helping in my decision!

A little off topic, but since it was mentioned, I have a question about the tamron 17-50. I have the minolta 50 1.7 and the 35-105 3.5-4.5. Is the tamron an upgrade to either of these for portraits?

None of those lenses would actually qualify as a "Portrait Lens". but a portrait lens is just the lens you use to take a portrait. I've had good luck with my Tamron 17-50/2.8, but that was when I had that lens attached, and had the opportunity to take an environmental portrait.
