The only 70-300mm lens that Sony makes is the 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 (G) SSM, selling for almost $800 now.

It's the best 70-300mm lens on the market.

I suspect you probably mean the Sony 75-300mm (versus 70-300mm) f/4.5-5.6 instead. I'd avoid the Sony 75-300mm, as it's a bit soft on it's longer end, with higher than average CA (Chromatic Aberrations), as is typical for budget lenses with that focal range.

I'd also avoid the budget Sigma 70-300mm lenses, as they have a reputation for stripping gears when used with newer Sony models. I sure wouldn't buy one.

If you're on a real tight budget, I'd look at the Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Autofocus lens instead (and it tests better than the Sigmas with that focal range anyway). It's still going to get a bit softer towards it's longer end, especially with the aperture wide open (as most budget lenses with that focal range do). But, it's better than most in it's price range and is a better value than most similar lenses.

Is the Sigma the APO? or is it the DG ore DL. The APO is better, but it still has the probllem with stripping that JimC mentioned.

No. The camera will not be ruined. The AF gears in the Sigma lens will be ruined and will need to be replaced at your cost.

The Sony 70-300 'G' is the best lens of its kind, for any camera body. Every manufacturer has some gems and some dogs. Sony has some gems that are 'best in class' but they're also very expensive. And the lens has more to do with image quality than the camera does.

Sigma makes some excellent lenses. The problem with the 70-300 APO is that it's an older design, and when Sony produced the A700, they gave it a stronger, faster motor that was too much for that lens, and no doubt, a few others. Sigma's newer lenses don't have the problem, and of course, Sigma's HSM lenses have their own motors.
