I saw a Minolta Maxxum 3500xi flash unit on Craig's List. Will it work on a Sony A200 camera?

No. It will only fire at full power (it's not compatible with newer cameras).

In the Minolta lineup, you'd need to use the 2500(D), 3600HS (D), or 5600HS (D) to get compatibility with digital.

I decided to order a Sony HVL F42AM for $149 (plus CA tax) instead. They ask for too much in the Ebay auction for a used Minolta flash.

Default It came in today

The HVL-F42AM came in today by UPS. It comes with a case and mini stand. I flashed a few pictures with it and it makes a big difference compared to the built-in flash on the A200. I got it for $162 with tax included and $10 less than amazon.com.

I found mine at cowboom.com which is an outlet store for Best Buy. They had many units at this price when I ordered it, but they were sold out in a hurry. They only drawback is that they charge sale tax on anything you buy no matter what state you are living in. They seem to have a lot of used stuffs for Sony. This flash is new, however.

This flash has a guide number of 42 and is good deal compared to other flash units manufactured by Canon or Nikon for their own cameras. I bought a Canon 4320EX II for $250 in January and is now around $280 with a guide number of 43. The Metz was $200 back then is now around $230. So the Sony HVL F42AM looks like a really good deal deal to me. I don't know why the camera price keep dropping but the accessories keep going up. I don't think it caused by the currency exchange rate. The camera manufacturers are taking the same approach like Hewett Packard who sell their printers to us dirty cheap and makes their money back on the inkjet cartridges.
