Default a30 steadyshot problems

i cant seem to turn on my steadyshot. it wont even highlight in the menu section for me to acess, any ideas?

This is from the a550 manual. the a230 has the same menu, hence stab in the dark...
The five bars of the SteadyShot scale flashes.
• The SteadyShot function does not work. You can continue to shoot but the
SteadyShot function will not work. Turn the camera off and on. If the
SteadyShot scale continues to flash, consult your Sony dealer or local
authorized Sony service facility.

thanks. when i turn it on the steadyshot is on then imediatley turns off on its own. i cant even select it in the menu, was hoping it was something i was doing wrong, oh well. also cannot access the flash compensation either.
