the sucessful point of using high iso is a matter of exposition, how well exposed is the shot if you underexpose just a bit and then in post process you bring it up, then you will get a lot of noise.

Pixel Peep is not the best way to judge a picture for focus and detail lost is ok, but for noise printed is the right way. But for example this crop from a picture is ISO 1600 from my A300 +50mm @ 5.6 natural light and you see pleanty of detail

And here is with some post process.

And returning to original question i think the Tamron 17-50 is a very nice glass.
