I'd remove the lens and put another on as a test. does live view show you the scene? does mf check lv flip the mirror and allow you to "zoom"? is there a sony style store nearby? at least then you'd get some experienced eyes looking it over before sending it for repair.

Try removing the lens and reseat it. If that doesn't work, try another memory card.

Is it doing the same thing in more than one mode?

If you tried to do something like use Shutter Priority (or Manual Exposure), and set the shutter speed too fast for the lighting, ISO speed and available apertures, you could get get black photos from underexposure.

I didn't dare suggest that. So I skirted the subject.

righteo, have worked out the problem
Not sure of what the name of it is, so bear with me while i do a "girl" describing parts lol.

The bit in behind the camera shutter, that opens and closes and reveals another wee mirror, isnt opening and shutting.
Did a comparison snapping off a pic with no lens on there, and did the same with my old A100, and whaddya know its faulty.
Off to the camera shop it goes, thankfully its still under warranty

was doing my head in, had already done what you guys have suggested, and it still wasnt working, so had a think on it, and above is what i came up with
