The Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 and 18-50/2.8 are excellent choices, as is the Tamron 17-50/2.8. What is it about your Sony 18-55 that you're not happy with?

BTW, those lenses are also available in optically stabilized versions, which aren't as good.

i dont know if it s the camera or the lens but my dark ares on the images are too noisy even at iso 200,and some images arent as sharp compared to beercan.and also in low light it is very difficult to focus on things further than 10 yards!or maybe i am just being fussy and dont know how to use my camera

I've been using the kit lens Sony 18-50mm on the A33 and have gotten good results in low light.

that's a symptom of DRO. If you've got DRO turned on, it brightens the image (increases the ISO) in the dark areas in order to extract more detail from them. That's a setting in the camera, and while a larger aperture lens will lessen the necessity of using DRO, it won't remove it.

That is something that another lens would certainly help with.

Default My replacement for the kit lens

I replaced my 18-70mm kit lens for my A200 with the Minolta 28-85mm f3.5/4.5 and like it a lot. Even though on the low end 28mm translates into 42mm and seems not wide enough for landscaping shoot. I think I did ok with this lens. Here is some samples I took after I first got it.

I agree with WCKSer. I got a 28-85 for $20 on Craigslist and it only comes off my camera when I need longer range. Very sharp, great colors, and love the macro switch.

Yes, the Minolta 28-85/3.5-4.5 is a very good replacement for the kit lens as well, if you don't need the wide end.
