Default Sony Telephoto Len

Hi.
I have a newbe question. I just purchase a Sony SLTA55, my first SLR camera. I Google Sony 55200, two lens showed up. SAL 55200 and SAL 55222/2 with SAM written on the len. Are there any difference between the two.

No, they are indeed the same lens. The Sony 55-200mm is a consumer grade lens, but very sharp and worth the price.

Sony made two versions of it. The original version does not have a built in focus motor (it uses the camera body's focus motor for Autofocus).

The newest version with SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) in it's description has a motor built into the lens.

BTW, their both optically identical to the Tamron 55-200 Di II. The SAL-55200 is just a change in the nameplate, while, as JimC says, the SAL-55-200/2 has its own AF motor. Also, the Tamron is cheaper and has a longer warranty.

So the newer len will give me a quicker focus due to the build in motor vs the old one using the body for auto focusing. I have the option of purchasing the old len for 100 brand new, or should I pay the extra for the new len with SAM. With the old len do I keep the AF/MF switch on the body to AF?

I'm not aware of any indication that the newer SAM lens focuses any faster than the older lens. The only real advantage is that the SAM lens will autofocus when it's mounted to a NEX body via Sony's A-Mount to E-Mount adapter.

And, on the A55, whenever the lens has an AF/MF switch, that'e the switch to use; if it doesn't, you use the switch on the body.
