Default Lens with 7 contacts vs 5 contacts

The newer Sony lens has 8 contacts on the lens mount whereas the old Minolta Maxxum lens has only 5 contacts. Is there any advantage to have 8 contacts over those which has only 5?

The extra three contacts first appeared in the xi bodies and lenses to support the motorized zoom. Later they were changed to support Minolta's ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) with its "D" series lenses that supplied distance information for the camera, mainly to better suppor the flash system.
