Occasionally I have the same "can't connect" with Firefox. I 've tried clearing the cache but the only thing that seemed effective was to re-start my AT&T 2Wire dsl modem.

That error is usually associated with a problem with your DNS service (on your computer, not with your ISP.)

Do you have any other computers? Can they get to Dyxum.com ok?

Dyxum.com is hosted on a webserver at 84.45.57.225, but that server hosts multiple domains, so you can't get to Dyxum.com by just typing the IP address into the Address bar, but try it and see if you get to the websitelive.net Website Holding Page. If you don't, then try opening a Command Prompt and type "tracert 84.45.57.225" (without the quotes) and you should get a list of routers between you and Dyxum.com, ending with something like:

10 89 ms 88 ms 108 ms kusanagi-ringo.c4l.co.uk [84.45.90.133]
11 106 ms 109 ms 90 ms ringo-cg4.c4l.co.uk [84.45.90.53]
12 90 ms 94 ms 89 ms europa.websitelive.net [84.45.57.225]

If you don't, try restarting, and before you open your web browser, open the Internet Options control panel, and on the General tab, click on the button to delete Temporary Internet Files. (Different versions of IE have that option labeled differently, so I can't tell you exactly what it will say, but it will definately say something about deleting Temporary Internet Files.) Do that, restart, and try again.

Despite its popularity, I dislike Firefox. Ever since I switched to Google Chrome, my connectivity and particularly high CPU utilization among other issues, went away. I was also sick and tired of Firefox constant updates, which in many instances break third-party plug-ins. I hardly ever have to restart my cable modem. When you say you can't connect, are you referring to a particular site or any site? If it's a particular site, I'd try a different browser but if it's to all sites, then you might want to contact AT&T (I hate them with a passion and a few months ago I got rid of them altogether...I feel FREE!). You should not have to restart your modem that often,.

The slow down is usually with several sites and I have a feeling it's Firefox but it only happens occasionally. It's mostly random. And AT&T - the I have to call them the better I like it. I tried U-verse but had to go back to their DSL - what a nightmare - it was like the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing.

Don't get me started...........

Just got back on. I don't know what the problem was but I deleted it from my bookmark did a google search and that got me back in. Added a new bookmark and all is well again. I didn't even have to sign back in.

By the way I'm using U-verse and Safari. I've noticed that it has slowed down lately. If things don't improve I will be making a call to AT&T soon.

I just did a DSL speed test from a few test sights and my download speed seems to be at 2.86 Mbps. I don't know if thats very fast or not.

Thanks guys I appreciate your suggestions.

Mike

It is not your browser - everything is slow right now due to heavy holiday internet traffic - internet shopping is way up this year, in part due to the inclement weather here and elsewhere, with people staying of the roads. Some sites (ebay and Paypal included) are really overloaded at peak periods. If you are on cable, your ISP and/or local line may not have sufficient bandwidth to handle the increased traffic. All told, you should notice it faster at night when traffic is lighter.

That's a pretty decent download speed for DSL. Many times, the slowdown is the site's fault not being able to handle high traffic. When you experience a slow response time, stop the download, open another tab and try a different site (Amazon, Yahoo, etc.). Usually these sites have enough server power to handle very high traffic at all times, so response time should be good.
