Default Minolta Maxxum 100-300mm APO

I have one of these lenses and have absolutely nothing negative to say about it. I would like to know if anyone has compared this to the Sony branded 70-300 zoom. If you need a lens of this type you will not regret buying the Minolta. My only question is "is the cost of the Sony worth the difference between it and the Minolta?". I acquired mine from a seller in Japan for $229.00 and it came with both caps, shade, and was in mint condition. After using it for a couple of years I would pay more for one in equal condition if I could find one.

The 100-300 APO is a vey good lens, and you got a great deal on one.

Is the Sony 70-300 'G' better? Yes.

Is the Sony 'G' worth the extra money? Not if you can get the 100-300 APO for $229.

Yes, it appears identical in photo and description.

$200 is a great deal. They, along with the 70-300 "Macro" "Big Beercan", also a very good lens, go for $300-$400 on eBay. The 100-400 APO goes for even more.

Be careful when shopping for a Minolta AF 100-300mm lens, as they also made non APO models.

You'll see APO Telezoom printed on the lens if it's an APO version. Click on the photos on the right side of the listing for one over at dyxum.com and you'll see that:

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Minolta-...PO_lens63.html

If it doesn't say APO, I'd avoid it. The non APO versions are nowhere near as good and are really cheap on the used market. There is a reason the APO versions usually sell for more than twice as much as the non APO versions.

They also made a D (ADI for Advanced Distance Integration) APO version of it. It's the latest and most desirable. It will have 8 versus 5 contacts on the lens mount (for transmitting distance information back to the camera for flash exposure purposes).
