Default Incompatible battery, use correct model

So I had a Sony a55 camera, and it got stolen, so I upgraded. Anyways, I decided to sell off my accessories. I sold it to someone and they just emailed me and said when they put it into their Nex 5n, they get the following message "Incompatible battery, use correct model." Any ideas why this would be happening? It's a legit sony battery as far as I can tell.

Sony Chips their battery like couple of other brands. Even though it will fit. The chip will not allow them to work. It is a way the companies make you pay more for the batteries.

That's terrible, sad day. Well thank you. I guess I have to give them a refund.

G'day adam

Take heart mate - it's not only Sony but all the major brands to it [ba$tard$]
In the great land downunder, I can get genuine panasonic battery for $100-$179 [different shops] vs $39 as a 3rd party copy, re-chipped, ready for use

Regards, Phil

Default chip or no chip?

Here's one for you - I have a pair of generics that work fine individually in the bodies, but when loaded into a battery grip generate the incompatible battery message.* Three other brands of generics work in both. Go figure.

* It only looked like they worked in the bodies - they did at first, but after a short while gave the same message. They do work without interruption in Sony's 5" LCD monitor screen, however, which must not require the chip.
