Remote Shutter Release

I just got my first tripod and I was pondering whether I need a remote shutter release? If so, should I go with the Sony cable or would a 3rd party cable work just as well? I have an Alpha 200 if it matters.

You can always just use the timer on your camera.

I have a 3rd party timed shutter release for time lapse and it works perfectly fine for a lot less money than the Sony one.

I use 3rd party shutter release cable I bought on eBay. It's so cheap ($5) I bought another one for backup.
