As a present owner of a decent amount of Maxxum film cam's and lenses, I'm pondering the 5D as a logical move from film to digital, and would appreciate any comments on the camera, but especially the 18-70 kit lens. Our present "family" digicam is a Canon PowerShot A75 and we are very happy with the resolution and quality, given it is a P&S.

Current Maxxum equipment:
Two 7000i bodies
50mm Maxxum lens
24mm Maxxum lens
28-85mm Maxxum lens
75-210mm Maxxum lens
100-300mm Maxxum lens
Maxxum 4000AF flash with adapter for use on i-series
Maxxum 1800AF flash with adapter for use on i-series

Thanks a ton.

unless you absolutely need the WA capability loose the lens as you are well stocked

(your flashes will NOT work automatically)

I guess my 35mm "all purpose" lens would have to be the 28-85mm, so the 18-70 appeals to me and I would anticipate that, if it is decent quality glass, it would cover 80% of my shots. I would hate to lose the WA capability and, w/o it or another such, my widest lens would be the 24, which would be only 36mm in 35mm equivalence. Of the two tele zooms I already own, I think the 70-210 is probably the better, and would be 105-315mm equivalent, more than enough "reach" for my needs. I suppose what I'm fishing for is some commentary on the quality of the 18-70, good or bad, from someone who has used it.

Thanks.

.......when used with a digital slr the equvalent range is 27-105mm

(i hear it is quite 'soft' at max aperture)

Yes, I was aware of that, but did not make clear that that was the case. With the 18-70 and the 70-210, the combined scope would be 27-315 in 35mm terms. The softness at max aperture concerns me, however...

The kit lens is fine and I appreciate the greater range over kit lenses from the opposition, it's never going to compete with top end lenses, but considering the kit was only £20 more than the body it does a very good job. It is softer all round than some lenses that I have used, but nothing that post processing can't fix. The wide angle end is definitely a bonus.

Yes that is 100% true!

You "Must" buy a new flash "D" type, or a Sigma one for Minolta digital cameras...cheaper that the Minolta ones.

BTW...I want to ask to all of you, two questions/inquiries?

1.- It's suggested to use the "AS" all the time; also with the internally or externally flash?

2.- After read the Owner/use manual well, I can't find which "FAT" use this lovely 5D body?.

Thanks so much for your always cute responses!

Have a an lovely 2006 year!

Greetings,
