I just picked up a 5D and when I first turn the camera on, there is a rattling sound for about 1 second. Is that the AS warming up?

NO NO NO - The AS is silent

camera should NOT 'rattle'

on the new KM D cameras the lens mount is very tight (to allow for 'wear in')

try removing and (firmly) reinstalling the lens with an 'aggressive' twist so that it 'seats' solidly

difficult to explain, but you should 'feel' it seat

if 'rattle' persists bring camera to store for diagnosis

I powered-up the camera without the lens attached and it makes the same sound. It's not the lens but the body that is making the noise. It's hard to describe, but sounds like a soft shaking or rattling. It only happens when the camera is powered on and lasts for about 1-1 1/2 seconds. The camera seems to work fine otherwise. Are you saying this sound is not normal?

I'm a 5D owner and the rattling sound that you hear is quite normal, so don't send it back.

The 5D always sets the lens to infinity on switch on, no matter what the previous settings, so the rattling appears to be due to this. If no lens is attached, it still rattles the focussing motor.

Thanks Ikki, I contacted KM's service department on two separate occasions and both calls determined that this in not normal for the 5D. I spent the day prepping the camera for shipment to the repair facility and filled out the necessary paperwork. On the way to shipping the camera, I stopped in a few camera stores to see if a new 5D made the same noise. Everyone I tried did indeed make the same exact rattling noise when turned on. I guess either KM doesn't know what they are talking about or there is a seriously large batch of bad 5Ds on the market. From your reply, I determined it was the former. A whole day wasted. I wish I had seen your reply sooner.

you said a 'rattling' sound - this is NOT normal

it IS normal for the power on autofocus to make a softbrrrrrring sound

Nope, it's a rattle. The camera does it without the lens attached to the body as well. I think the sound you are referring to is the lens being focused to infinity which is also audible. Perhaps the 7D is different, I didn't test one of those, but my camera sounded just like the ones in the stores and Ikki said his makes the same sound so I guess it's normal.
