Hi all,

Well I just got my first SLR (5d) and now I'm on the quest of acquiring a few lenses! I picked up myfirst non-kit lens yesterday (a used 70-210 f/4) and I'm very happy with it so far. I would like to pick up a used 50mm prime but not sure what to do. Several camera stores in the area carry used f/1.7s which I can pickup for under $40 all day long. Reading this forum I've heard this is a very good lens for the $$. Yesterday I was in there and the shop had a used f/1.4 for $130. I'm just wondering if it would be worth saving the extra money and getting the faster lens.I know it's slightly faster, but arethe optics any better or isare there other reason to pay the premium? Any advice is appreciated.

70-210mm f/4 is a good choice.

About 50mm, i have the f/1,7 one and it's great.
Many people have it. Old and new versions are pretty equal.
f/1,4 is a little better but didn't worth the triple price.
So, go ahead for f/1,7 you won't be disapointed. For sure.

Later.

On the other hand, if you don't mind spending a couple hundred bucks the 1.4 isn't bad. Choice of either standard 50 is pretty much budget related although the new 1.4 has circular blades and the 1.4's sharpen up before the 1.7 does.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Right now budget is definately a concern, so I'm thinking the f/1.7 will be next on my list. I'm sure that lens will be far better than the man behind the camera in this case. For the price of them around here it's hard to pass up.
