Will the Minolta AF 80-200/2,8 APO(G) work with the KM 5D? I understand it's equivalent to 120-300 on a dSLR. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Yes it will work on the 5D. It's a great lens. Also KM 100-300 APO or 70-200 SSM. Depends a lot on your budget.

Thanks, nooner, I've looked into it further. Someone suggested the 80-200 but it's totally out of my price range, even used. So, is there a good compatible zoom you would recommend that's inexpensive? I just bought the 5D with the kit lens and I don't have a lot more to spend right now.

The 70-210 F4 is nice. They don't make a 70-210 F3.5-5.6. There is a F3.5-4.5 which is good and a F4.5-5.6 which is not so good.

B&H has some in stock right now (as least, right this minute as I'm typing they show stock).

Birding might need something with longer reach than 200mm(300mm equiv in 35mm) range though. I think if you can find it the 100-400APO might be the most economical choice....

Longer? Hmmmm... Unfortunately, B&H doesn't have the 300mm f/2.8G (D) SSM. But, they are accepting orders with a bargain price of only $4,599.95

Konica Minolta 300mm f/2.8G (D) APO SSM Autofocus Lens at B&H

Sorry, I couldn't resist, since he did ask about the 70-200mm f/2.8G SSM lens. ;-)

If you're not in a hurry, you may also want to wait and see if KM launches any new lenses at the PMA show next month. It's a popular show for launching new photography related products.

Yea, it is a bit more economical compared to the Minolta G lenses (especially those with SSM). It would also give you the flexibility of a zoom versus a prime.

No SSM, though (and that G lens is going to focus faster, and it's brighter and sharper). ;-)
