I have too (used generic batteries).

You see rare problems with batteries exploding due to lack of needed voltage protection. But, these are very rare and I doubt the better known suppliers of generics are going to risk that kind of issue.

Also, like you said, KM batteries are probably made by the same manufacturers as some of the others.

I can understand it if someone doesn't want to risk it (even though I don't have a problem with generics). But, right now, KM accessories are in very short supply (and probably will continue to be until after the deal with Sony is finalized at the end of this month).

With all cameras I have ever had I would get generic backup batteries, and never have I been able to tell the difference in quality and longevity. Go ahead and hunt down and spend the extra money on the genuine brand, but to me that is a waste.

I have been using generic batteries for years. First in my 7hi, then my A2, and now in my 7D without having any problems. I just can't justify the extra price when I get the same results.

Honestly though, I would avoid the $0.99 batteries you can get at Ebay or some trade shows. There has to be some quality difference between those and the $60 ones my local camera shop sells. But buying a decent name brand aftermarket battery shouldn't be a problem.

BTW, my local camera store http://www.huroncamera.net/servlet/StoreFront does have some genuine KM np-400 batteries.

The 99c ones do just as good of a job. Never had an issue with any of them.
