I concur: It is hard to believe that this is the best the Tokina can do under the same conditions....

Based on Kassandro's suggestion, here are three sample photos. The first and second were taken at our local harbor. The first was taken with my Nikon D-50 and the Tamron 28-300mm XR Di lens set to 28mm. The second is the same photo as #1, but zoomed to 300mm. The third photo is a retake with my KM 5D and the Tokina 24-200mm lens. I retook the photo based on kassandro's comment about a possible mis-focus by the 5D.

That proves the Tamron to be dramatically better than the Tokina. And the shot at 300 mm is very sharp. I have heard some critics state that the Tamron is very soft at 300. These images prove otherwise, even resized.

Here's some shots with a 7D and 28-300 XR Di by Jim NAZ. All shots except the pigeons in flight. He posted this in response to people claiming it was soft at 300mm. I'm thinking about one too.:?

Get one! I have the 28-300mm XR from ebay(Cameta) for $144.00 . Its my outdoor travel light Lens.Sometimes I get soft [email protected] but other times I get it sharp. with great colors. 250mm and below comes out great. My 5D is only 3 weeks old so Im still learning the best settings for this lens.
  • Needs lots of light to do its job well[/*]
  • I set the 5D colors to Landscape(all settings +1), 50% of pics will not require PP[/*]
  • Focus hunt when goin from wide to tele, trick is to release the shutter button as it nears focus then half press again to zero in. [/*]
  • Low light? not a chance! Thats where I use my Sigma 28-70mm EX DG
[/*]
Its built is ok compared to others but for the price I think its a steal.

Very very nice. But I can't believe howterriblethat Tokina is. So, I guess, the Tamron 28-300 will be my walk-around lens. And when I take my accessories bag with me I include the Minolta 50mm 1.7 lens andVivitar 70-210 2.8-4 (for lower light) and the Tamron 2x teleconverter. Soon, I will test out the Vivitar 100-400 for ultra-zoom purposes. I won an auction for $60 on it. If it's anything as good as my Vivitar 70-210, it'll be a winner. And, of course, I'll keep the 18-70 kit lens for wide angle purposes.

On the auction block I will put my Sigma 28-70 3.5-4.5 and Sigma 75-300 4.5-5.6. I won't need them anymore. They are great lenses, but I can't carry more stuff and don't need the duplicate zoom range.

Good luck selling the Sigma 28-70. I tried mine on eBay 4 times and no bids. I sold the 70-210 the first auction. I have an 800Si in addition to my 5D, so I can use the lens I guess.

Sometimes that happens. Relist it. Make sure to put 5D and 7D into the title so DSLR owners find it.
