Hi All,

Picked up this lens today as I wanted a good quality option to replace the kit lens on my 5D to allow a circular polarising filter.

Everything is fine as far as I can tell, although I have not downloaded onto the PC yet.

From all of the info on this lens it willtell you that you can get 1:2.3 (or something like that) macro with a 20cm close focus throughout thewholezoom range. Not bad for a lens of this familyI thought.

If you have got this lens, or if you have read anything about it have you seen anything suggesting that it will allow you to focus closer than 20cm? Well with mine I can focus down to just in front of the Skylight filter which I have fitted and with a 2x Telecon the initial results seem amazing!!!!!

What do you think, a faulty lens, bad information in the blurb or something else?

Thanks,

Mark.

I don't know, but keep us posted on what you find out. Something that's roughly a half stop brighter on the wide end, and roughtly 2/3 stops brighter on the long end may be an appealing choice to 5D owners looking for alternatives to the 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Kit lens.

Have you plotted when it starts dropping the aperture down by focal length yet?

The 18-70mm DT kit lens is down to f/5.6 by the time you get to about 35mm with it.

It is better than that with the changes later in the zoom. The apertureranges are:

f2.8 17mm

f3.2 17-26mm

f3.5 26-35mm

f4 35-50mm

f4.5 50mm+

Focal length was taken off of the Exif rather than the barrel.

Cool -- it's about a stop brighter in the middle.

Keep us posted on AF speed/accuracy, color, sharpness/contrast, flare resistance, fringing, etc.

I don't think that the focusing distance is a problem with the lens. The Sigma 18-200mm that I have just bought is quoted as a minimum focus distance of 45cm across the zoom range, but focuses down to more like 13cm across the range.
