The Gary Friedman book is excellent. Very clear explanations, and real world examples.

You can download it as an ebook (pdf) cheaply, or order the printed version.

I found it explained a lot the manual didn't even begin to cover.

There are a couple of other threads here extolling its virtues if you want more reviews.

The manual is not intended to be an explanation of photography. It is basically just for the user to get aquainted with camera features. Having said that, I feel they could have done a better job.

The Friedman book is very good and provides a fairly comprehensive overview of each of the cameras functions and explains the basic concepts of photography and delves into how things differ for digital verses film. I found it en excellent refresher on the basics of photography.
