don't mean to sound like a newbie minoltian, but why km 24-85? you already got the the highly regarded 28-75...
The Minolta 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 is my favorite "walk around".

From my perspective, it's focal range is more useful (starts out wider and goes longer compared to something like a 28-75mm), in a lighter package (not everyone wants the size/weight of an f/2.8 zoom). It's not as small and light as the kit lens. But, you can't have everything. lol

In most conditions I personally use a camera in, this focal range works just fine (works out to an angle of view that's equivalent to about 36-128mm on a 35mm model), only losing a stop on average to an f/2.8 zoom.

It also focuses fine (I've never had any problem at all with focus speed/reliability with this lens). It even manages to focus fine in lighting I've had problems in using a Tamron 35-105mm f/2.8, even though the Tamron is brighter.

It's also a relatively sharp lens for a zoom with it's focal range (it's sharper wide open than a lot of zooms are):

http://old.photodo.com/prod/lens/det...5-45-371.shtml

It's not the nicest looking lens around. No gold rings on this one. But, don't judge a book by it's cover. ;-) It's also inexpensive (at least at the time I bought mine), when you could find them for around $100

Because it's a dated lens design, my guess is that newer lenses probably have better coatings for use in harsher lighting. But, from my experience with it, it works just fine in lighting that I've had problems with using some other lenses. This lens has been a favorite of mine, and my KM 5D wears the 24-85mm often.

I posted some snapshots from mine in this thread a while back:

ah... that clears it up a bit. mahalo nui loa. thoseare some pretty clear shots of your bro. note the fishing line in the 4th and 5th pictures.

a hundred bucks seems pretty reasonable, but i gotta lay off the lens purchases (for a while). sh!t aint gonna fit in my lunch bag anymore :G. i actually have a block of foam i found that i'll be cutting to fit into a bag to carry all my junk in. the less it looks like a camera bag, the better right?

Those were all straight from the camera, too (no USM or anything). Maybe I've got a better than average copy of it or something. But, I haven't noticed anyone griping about one yet.

Just got my 24-85MM.... it is a bute. Got it in EX+ condition. I put it in on my 5D and it looks like it belongs there. I experimented around the house and so far I am impressed, but I want to put it through the paces tomorrow on the way to work. I'm also waiting for an 11-18mm KM to get here in a few days. After this I'm done for a while too. I really wanted the Tamron 90mm 2.8, but since I picked up an 11-18mm, I think I should wait. I have more lenses than I need but most of them I'm keeping. I might get rid of a NIB 28-105mm I picked up cheap. I also have 3 18-70 kit lenses, but they won't fetch much so I may just keep them ot at least 1 or 2.

dude, that's more than i can say about my new toy (sigma 24-135). that thing is a honker. i'm really happy with it though. the focusing ring turns when the camera auto focuses, but it's no big deal... just kinda took me by suprise is all. both zoom ring and focusing rings are super tight (in a good, positive feeling kind of way), and it's awfully hard to get the lens cap off with the hood on.

i puttered around in my garden with it for a few minutes the other day, but did not have the chance to see how the photos came out on my computer. it focuses pretty quick, and seems a bit quieter than the kit. i like the fact that it has a metal lens mount, and a focusing ring that is wide enough to actually be usable. i'm also not sure if it's just in my head, but my viewfinder seems a bit brighter. definately worth the clams i spent for it.

...the wallet is telling me to stop buying stuff... but the little voice in my head is telling me my collection is not complete without the beercan and the 50mm f/1.7... and that 5D vertical grip (if it ever becomes available in the US)

Yea meanstreak I ment the 28-300XR.

Maxxum7d, That 100mm f2 is one heck of a lens. I only have 3 more that I wish to get the 85mm 1.4GD, the 100mm f2, and the 135mm STF. If I could get those 3 I would be one happy camper.

Regards,

Alex

Keep your lenses close, but keep the STF closer!!!!!! Thankfully STF will be in production like the 85mm (don't care about this one though)
