It's very easy to use an external flash with NEX5. Set small NEX-flashlight to lowest power or use a darkred filter (to avoid light by this flash).
The NEX flashlight is used as a trigger for YONGNUOs in slave mode. I am using YONGNUO YN460-II ($ 46 incl. shipping) and a YN467. YN460-II ![]() YN467 ![]() both ![]() |

No. I do not need TTL, also I do not need such silly LCDs backside. 7 LEDs are better.
Why pay for such gimmick > € 300. YONGNUO YN460-II = € 35 incl. shipping. |

TTL works well, there is a place for everything.

Thanks for the information of optical slave.
I do have the odd question on external flash. I wonder if Sony has an adapter for NEX 5/3/5N that can turn the accessory into a hot shoe capable device. I have a wireless trigger with Cactus v5 and if such an adapter is available, it will go a long way for extending the use of NEX 5N with wireless trigger and external flash with manual control. And it won't need the use of optical slave or the need of optical slave built into a 3rd party flash such as the YONGNUOs. This is not a good picture to show but it should give an idea of a set up of 2 wireless flash in manual setting ![]() In the picture, two Nikon SB 25 are mounted on the Cactus v5 wireless receiver. The transmitter is mounted on a camera hot shoe. The problem and the lacking in NEX 5N is the absence of hot-shoe. If such an adapter from Sony accessory shoe to a hot shoe attachement is available it will be a great tool to get. I search around and I can't find such a device that is remotely related except the use of optical slave which both of my Nikon SB 25 flashes are lacking. The Nikon SB 28 has the optical slave but the unit are much higher in price and harder to get. Thanks, Hin Last edited by hinioman; Nov 11, 2011 at 4:39 PM. |
