With the panny 14-140mm HD, a video lens that is the same price, you get lecia glass. That explains part of the huge price.

Lumix 14-140 (factor 2) is ~ the same like Sony 18-200 (factor 1.5)
Canon/Nikon ... cannot build/don't have such a lens! Prices of both lenses are similar.

I am really keen to buy the NEX-VG10 however I would prefer to use a Nikkor lens with the camera rather than the Sony. Would either one of these work? Nikon 24-70MM F2.8 G Lens or the Nikon AF-S 14-24MM F2.8 Lens

a) you need a suitable adapter
b) you lose all features you have with Sony lenses
c) price camera + Nikon > $4000 .... not worth

That's about right when you look at the difference in price for Canon's IS and non-IS lenses.
400 dollars? the canon 18-200mm USM IS is not even that much.
I was referring to the difference in price between Canon's IS lenses and their equivalent non-IS lenses. For instance:

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM vs. EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM or EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

EF 70-200mm f/4L USM vs. EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM

EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro USM vs. EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

The extra optical elements that provide the stabilization make the lens design more complex, and of course there's all those extra moving parts and the sensors and logic that tell them when and how to move. Adding IS to a lens makes it much more expensive.

Those lenses require an electronic connection to the camera for aperture control (they do not have an aperture ring), which you would not have via an adapter.

Ok, just got word from Sony. They are simply E-mount lenses, neither Carl Zeiss or Sony G.
