Default convert Sony NEX-5 AVCHD MOV files to ProRes 422?

My Sony NEX-5 are still fairly new for me,I was just reading that it is
best to convert the AVCHD .mov files to Apple ProRes 422 for editing in
FCP.
If I don't convert them and just log & transfer directly into FCP (which
I've done a few times now already)?

hi, if you recorded 1080i from sony camcorder, then you can use log and transfer to import the MTS files to FCP. Of course, FCP has no the native support on MTS and just make mts files to mov with pro res in the background processing.

Under my impression, sony nex-5 creates 1080i mts files.

For 1080p mts camcorder files, conversion from progressive scanning to interlaced scanning is needed. Then next step is log and transfer.
In all, trying a video converter is a good choice.

Also to get apple pro res, you must make sure that you have installed FCP 6 or above. Otherwise you will meet the problem with only audio and no video.

you'd better convert sony nex-5 to mov with naive apple codec: pro res or aic. Searching the key words online, you will find one simple conversion software.

good luck.

To edit Sony Alpha NEX-5 AVCHD footages in FCP on Mac, you'd better transcode Sony AVCHD footages to FCP compatible Apple ProPres codec for further editing.

Now just get this Sony AVCHD to FCP Converter installed
