After input from people on this board I have decided that I want my next camera to be a Sony R1. Which accessories are useful or needed? I know they will suggest all kinds of things at the camera shop and I wanted owners to tell me what is really useful to have and what is not necessary. I would really appreciate your input.

MUST HAVE
1) CF card or MS card or both - at least 1GB
2) camera bag. I do not like holster type since camera is not a gun.

It is not bad to have
3)Flash of your choice. Dedicated or non-dedicated it is up to you. Dedicated SONY F32x you can buy for $130 and non-dedicated flash about $90.
4) Close-up lens
5) UV filter.
6) spare battery and compact charger

Do not rush to buy TELE and WIDE ANGLE lens. Make research whether you really cannot live without.

I would only recommend a B&W UV filter ( immediately)

and a 1GB Compact Flash Card.

Take your time to learn your camera before spending money on accessories;

then I would buy Photoshop Elements 5.

Do I need to purchase only Sony memory sticks or compact flash cards or will other brands work just as well?

I would stay away from memory sticks as Sony has abandonded them

for Memory Stick Duo.

Recently various brands are switching to SD cards, possibly the wave of the future.

Stay with CF, Lexar, Sandisk offers rebates, etc.

FIRST THING TO BUY IS THE UV FILTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with your R-1.

Regards, Nicholas

Can you suggest a UV filter that I should use? Also I like taking group family photos. Will I need the extra flash accessory for this?

I use:

B&W 67 mm, UV MRC ( Multi-coated ). It reads 'Pro-F' on outer edge.

The salesman will try to sell what he has. I suggest only this one.

Check B&H, etc. Only buy new.

Nicholas

PS, the built in flash will serve you at about 10' depending on aperture

and ISO. The 32x is a bit slow but gives great exposures.

If you are planning family photos indoors, flash is essential.
A built-in flash fires straightforward and makes harsh shadows and washed out colors.
With external flash you can aim it into the ceiling or walls and have a bounced light that makes a HUGE difference.
Built-in flash is good for outdoor photography and allows reducing shadows created by sunlight. It calls fill light.
But first of all you need memory card if you want to take a picture. R1 can't write photo but memory card (CF or MS duo, pro, or pro duo is up to you).

UV filter many folks use for front glass protection and keep it permanently on lens with lens cap affixed to a filter. Some do not like such a protection and complain that filter creates a green cast on photo and they have to waist time fixing colors later during PP

Again, memory card is first priority
